President Trump Postlaunch Remarks (NHQ202005300080)

Opinion: Why US is no longer the promised land for Indians

Posted on 26 January 202526 January 2025 by Pradeep Jayan

For decades, the United States has been the ultimate dream destination for countless Indians seeking better opportunities, higher education, and a brighter future. The promise of the “American Dream” lured thousands overseas, but as the global landscape shifts, it is time for Indians to reevaluate their aspirations and focus on opportunities closer to home. Recent developments in the U.S., coupled with rising incidents of racism in many developed nations, make a compelling case for investing in India rather than chasing an increasingly elusive dream abroad.

Donald Trump’s executive decision to end birthright citizenship for children of certain immigrants marks a significant departure from a policy that has long been a cornerstone of America’s immigrant-friendly image. This change not only introduces uncertainty for prospective immigrants but also signals a broader shift in how the country views its immigrant population. Alongside this, reports of growing racism and discrimination against Indian professionals and students in the U.S. and other developed nations highlight the challenges Indians face in places they once considered safe havens.

These trends are not isolated. Developed nations, including the U.S., the U.K., and parts of Europe, are witnessing a rise in nationalist rhetoric and protectionist policies. Visa restrictions, deportations, and barriers to work opportunities for foreign nationals are becoming the norm. For Indian talent, these hurdles raise a critical question: is it worth enduring uncertainty and hostility for a future abroad, or is it time to bet on India’s promise?

India is no longer the struggling economy of the past. It has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies globally, with a thriving start-up ecosystem, a burgeoning middle class, and unprecedented government focus on infrastructure and innovation. Sectors like technology, fintech, healthcare, renewable energy, and manufacturing are booming, offering immense potential for those willing to harness it.

Consider this: India’s digital economy is set to surpass $1 trillion by 2030. Initiatives like “Make in India,” “Digital India,” and the production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes are creating a fertile ground for entrepreneurs and professionals to thrive. The country’s expanding market, young population, and growing consumer base present opportunities that are not just lucrative but also more accessible for Indians.

Beyond professional opportunities, India offers a sense of belonging and stability that no foreign land can match. Racism and xenophobia are harsh realities in many developed nations, and Indians abroad often find themselves grappling with identity crises and safety concerns. In contrast, India’s diversity and social fabric ensure a more inclusive environment, free from the alienation many experience overseas.

For generations, Indians have equated success with moving abroad, often at the cost of personal sacrifices and societal disconnection. It’s time to redefine success and recognize the wealth of opportunities available within our borders. Staying in India does not mean settling for less; it means contributing to the country’s growth story while reaping its rewards.

India’s potential is undeniable, but tapping into it requires a shift in mindset. The youth must see India as a land of promise, not just a stepping stone to foreign shores. Employers, educators, and policymakers have a role to play in creating an environment that fosters innovation, supports career growth, and provides global exposure without the need to leave the country.

The days of flocking to the U.S. and other nations in search of a better life are over. The risks outweigh the rewards, and the opportunities at home are too significant to ignore. India stands at the cusp of transformation, and its success depends on the collective efforts of its people.

By choosing to invest their talent and resources in India, today’s youth can shape a future that not only fulfills their aspirations but also contributes to the nation’s rise as a global powerhouse. It’s time to embrace the opportunities at home and build the India of tomorrow, together.
